What is Operapolitan's Humans of Opera?

July 16, 2017

Humans of Opera

"Humans of Opera" is a page on Operapolitan where we bring, to the forefront, important issues that are often ignored because they can be difficult to address and discuss. Activist, Audre Lorde, said, "It is not our differences that divide us, it is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences." Well, that is our goal with Humans of Opera. It doesn't make you a bad person to notice differences between yourself and others- to disregard is the offense.

We are all different and the best way to push back against division, ignorance, fear, and negativity, is to talk, respectfully, about the issues that are their source. The Operapolitan, Humans of Opera Forum, will offer a safe space for discussion of these important issues. Together, we can promote dialogue about the things that need to be talked about within our operatic community.

This includes but is not limited to:

Mental Health
LGBTQIA+ Rights
Racism
Intersectional Feminism
Body Positivity
Religious Inclusion
Self Care

Operapolitan is so happy to have Shareese Arnold at the helm of this project. She is a leader among her peers, working everyday to raise awareness of the issues mentioned above, and to promote love, confidence, and celebration of the differences that comprise our community and our world.

Here is the a brief biography to help you get to know Shareese Arnold, our Humans of Opera Advocate:

"Believer. Singer. Wife. Mother.

Creative. Storyteller. Teacher. Lover.

Advocate. Black. Woman. Fat. StrongAF"

These are all descriptives I use to help others get to know me, but, above all, I'm a human being that longs for the freedom and support of others. I'm an opera singer who also loves to teach and write about Disability Studies in music. When I'm not telling the stories of others in the form of song, I actively use my social media platforms to share the stories of those who get lost in the busy hum of this world. This includes but is not limited to:

Mental Health
LGBTQIA+ Rights
Racism
Intersectional Feminism
Body Positivity
Religious Inclusion
Self Care

I want to remind the world around me that above all else, they deserve to be loved, appreciated and respected. That, to me, is the real meaning in being pro-life."

"P.S. I love cheese, Moana, working out, and (my boyfriend) Shostakovich.
